A seborrheic keratosis is a common, harmless (noncancerous) skin growth with a waxy, scaly, or “stuck-on” appearance. It usually develops in adults over 40 and is not related to sun exposure.
These growths often appear as brown, black, or light tan patches on the face, chest, shoulders, or back. When you touch them, they typically feel slightly raised, rough, or waxy. Although seborrheic keratoses do not turn into skin cancer, they can sometimes resemble cancerous lesions, so medical assessment is recommended if their appearance changes.
Seborrheic keratoses are normally painless and do not require treatment. However, you may choose to have them removed if they become irritated by clothing or jewelry, or if you find them cosmetically bothersome.
