Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure offered at our Burlington clinic to reduce the appearance of spider veins and small visible veins.

Spider veins may appear on the face, legs, or other areas. Sclerotherapy is commonly used for suitable spider veins on the legs, while Laser Vein Therapy may be recommended for certain small superficial vessels depending on the area and vein type.

Before and After Sclerotherapy

How Does Sclerotherapy Work?

Sclerotherapy involves injecting small amounts of a sclerosing agent directly into the spider vein using a very small needle. The solution irritates the lining of the vessel wall, causing the treated vein to close and gradually fade over time. The procedure typically does not require anesthesia. Potential side effects include bruising, swelling, and slight skin discolouration.

Over several weeks, the treated vessel is gradually absorbed by the body and becomes less visible.

Sclerotherapy Process

Many clients notice significant improvement in treated vessels, although results vary depending on the number, size, and severity of the spider veins. A better assessment can be given during your complimentary consultation at our Burlington location.

All injections are performed by our qualified medical staff under supervision of Dr. McDonald, our supervising medical director.

Sclerotherapy vs. Laser Vein Therapy

Laser Vein Therapy is a light-based treatment option used to reduce the appearance of spider veins, small visible veins, and superficial vessels. At Laser Aesthetics, this treatment is provided in a professional clinical setting with a focus on proper assessment, patient safety, and customized treatment planning.

Laser Vein Therapy may be suitable for clients who want a non-surgical option for visible veins and prefer not to use injectable treatments such as sclerotherapy. During your consultation, Laser Aesthetics will assess your concerns and determine whether this treatment is appropriate for your skin type, vein concern, and treatment area.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy may be suitable for clients who want to reduce the appearance of spider veins or small visible veins, especially on the legs. A good candidate is someone with realistic expectations and no medical concerns that would make treatment unsuitable.

During your consultation at Laser Aesthetics, our team will assess your visible veins, review your medical history, and determine whether sclerotherapy, laser vein therapy, or another option may be more appropriate.

Recovery and Aftercare

Most clients can return to normal daily activities shortly after sclerotherapy. Laser Aesthetics will provide aftercare instructions based on your treatment area and individual needs.

Temporary bruising, swelling, tenderness, redness, or slight skin discolouration may occur. Compression stockings may be recommended for some clients after treatment. You may also be advised to avoid excessive heat, strenuous activity, and sun exposure for a period of time after your appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sclerotherapy

Is sclerotherapy used for spider veins?

Yes. Sclerotherapy is commonly used to reduce the appearance of spider veins and small visible veins, especially on the legs. A consultation is required to determine whether your veins are suitable for treatment.

How many sclerotherapy treatments will I need?

The number of sessions depends on the number, size, and severity of the spider veins being treated. Some clients may need more than one treatment session. A better estimate can be provided during your consultation at Laser Aesthetics.

Does sclerotherapy hurt?

Most clients tolerate sclerotherapy well. Because a very fine needle is used, discomfort is usually brief, but sensitivity can vary from person to person.

Is there downtime after sclerotherapy?

Most clients can return to normal daily activities shortly after treatment. Temporary bruising, swelling, tenderness, redness, or slight skin discolouration may occur after the procedure.

What is better: sclerotherapy or laser vein therapy?

It depends on the type, size, location, and depth of the visible veins. Sclerotherapy may be recommended for some spider veins, while Laser Vein Therapy may be better suited for certain superficial vessels or clients who prefer a non-injection option.

Who performs sclerotherapy at Laser Aesthetics?

Sclerotherapy injections are performed by qualified medical staff under the supervision of Dr. McDonald, Laser Aesthetics’ supervising medical director.

When will I see results after sclerotherapy?

Results develop gradually over several weeks as the treated vessels begin to fade. The timeline can vary depending on the size of the veins, the number of vessels treated, and your individual response.

Do I need a consultation before sclerotherapy?

Yes. A consultation is recommended before treatment so Laser Aesthetics can assess your visible veins, review your medical history, and determine whether sclerotherapy or another treatment option is appropriate.

BTL EMSELLA is a new service now being offered here, and if you are someone like me who has lived her life with too many bathroom breaks, I would recommend giving this treatment a try. I have dealt with a sensitive bladder for most of my life, and to say the least, this has been inconvenient. I was getting up at least once a night and whenever I was out looking for the closest washroom. When I heard about this treatment being offered, I decided to give it a try. Six sessions over 3 weeks. Nothing invasive or painful. My experience so far has been liberating in that I am no longer having an interrupted sleep and can wander the mall for a few hours before scoping out the nearest washroom. In my opinion this has been totally worth it.
